WAC Intermediate Class

The WAC Intermediate Climbing Class Cochairs stand in solidarity with Black communities and with everyone working to bring about systemic change that promotes anti-racism. We recognize that there is overt and implicit racism embedded in the outdoor community, within this club, and within ourselves that needs to be confronted and reconciled.

We embrace the sanctity and humanity of all Black people. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, David McAtee, and locally Manuel Ellis, along with so many other Black victims of murder and police brutality.

WAC was founded by an activist 100 years ago, and should be a community richly informed by and ultimately run by groups that traditionally have not had the privilege to enjoy and feel safe in the outdoors. The 2020 WAC Intermediate Climbing Class Cochairs are actively looking for ways to improve the ICC in this regard, while we do our own personal audits and improve ourselves.

Due to the nature of Covid-19, the continued social distancing recommendation from the WA state government, and keeping in consideration the small communities we affect the WAC Intermediate Class Cochairs and the Board of Directors have decided to cancel the 2020 Intermediate Climbing Class.

The Washington Alpine Club's Intermediate Climbing Class offers lead rock and ice climbing experience that builds on the mountaineering skills taught in the Basic Class. This course focuses on teaching the skills necessary to become competent climbing partners in technical rock, ice, and alpine environments.

The class format follows that of the Basic Climbing Class with Tuesday night lectures followed by weekend field trips.

Class sizes are small and have a roughly one to one student to instructor ratio.
